Tamil Archanai Movement gathers momentum in Tamil Nadu

WSC background and update

A campaign for empashizing the vital need for Tamil Archanai in our temples, not only in Tamil Nadu but also throughout the world had been included as part of World Saiva Council's 10-point Action Plan as from our Paris Conference on August 1994. Following this, various articles were appeared in Saiva Ulakam from time to time (SU 9, 1995 onwards) explaining the reasons behind this move to give a place of honor to our mother toung and restore the Saiva Thirumurai hymns and Vaishnava Pasurams to their rightful place in our temple inspiring bakti in our hearts and mind through our own language which is easily understood.

The above articles have clarified and demolished the three following major objections raised in this matter namely viz:
1. That archanai is temple pooja and therefore should not be changed.
2. The use of Tamil is against the agamas.
3.A long tradition should not be changed.
4.In the article refer to above (SU9,1995) the great Saiva scholar, Prof.M.Arunachalam argues forcefully in favour of conducting arcanas in tamil language by clarifying the meaning of arcana and citing versus from kamika Agama that in fact lays down forcefully the need to conduct arcanas not only in Tamil but also in many other languages. Sanskrit does not have any exclusive privilage over Tamil.

The real arcana is not the namavali where the attributes of a deity are enumerated and praises are given. The real arcana is pooja and 16 different types are identified in the Agamas. They are aavahanam, stapanam, bathyam, aasanam, arkiyam, abiseham; decorating with attires and sandal paste and so forth; pushparchana, showing light of various shapes, naivethiyam, sacrifice, nityapuja, special sacrifice; singing and dancing and finally the concluding of pooja.

Here pushparchana is one of the pooja which is followed by the showing of lights. A verse in Kamikaagama mentions that at the end of every pooja songs in Tamil along with dances must be rendered. Also songs in Sanskrit with faultless pronounciation.

Traditional practices should change according to the times without giving up however the central principles. The fundamentals must be kept but in this we must avoid unwanted rigidly. Tradition is continuity in change where the old is displaced and the new is installed. This is the essence of a tradition that is alive and that which serves the useful purpose of guiding the lives of men so that they develop and progress in an authentic manner, in the path of mukti."

2. Progress since WSC Thanjavur Conference (December 1997)

Tamil Nadu government implements Tamil Archanai

Although in Tamil Nadu the campaign for Tamil Archanai has been going on for several years from the 1960s led by the respected late T.T. Kundrakkudi Adikalar and others, the real impeters for concerted action took place only after the above Thanjavur World Saiva Conference. The Honorable Dr.TamizhKudimakan delivering his valedictory conference address assured that the Tamil nadu government would pave the way for Tamil Archanai. We are indeed proud of Siva Thiru Meykanda Thevan IAS, Director of HRE & CB who not only took administrative messures to enforce the ministers order but also arranged for the Training in Tamil Archanai and Siva VeeLvi of over 200 of Othuvaars and Sivachariyar who volunteered for these on-going Training Courses being conducted throught Tamil Nadu.

Despite minor setbacks but with the grace of Lord Shiva the stage is now set well and truly for Tamil Archanai to be conducted in all temples of Tamil Nadu. Temples around the world can now get their required priests from these qualified people who are proficient in the conducting of Tamil Pooja including kumbabishekams through Tamil using Thirumurai Hymns etc. In this connection we congratulate, the Saiva dedication of Senthamizh VeLvi Sathurar Sakthivel Murukan B.E. for conducting the Tamil Archanai Training Courses so successfully thus making a land mark contribution to Tamil and Saivism in the present context.

3. Saiva Adheenams lead the campaign in Madras

Beyond our chosen bakti mode of prayer and restoration of Saiva Thirumurai to its rightful place in the temples, the central issue here is one regarding the status of our mother tongue, Tamil regaining its place of honor in the temple during Poojas etc. Speaking with the support of Saiva Mutts and leading the consolidated fasting campaign of many saiva organisational representatives at Sri kabaliswarar Temple in Madras, on 19/10/1998,

WSC Chairman of our International Advisory Committee, T.T.Kundrakudi Ponnambala Adikalar urged Tamils and saiva organisations to join forces to carry on the struggle for Tamil Archanai in temples in a sustained and committed way throughout Tamil Nadu until victory is achieved. We are also encouraged by the honorable minister Dr.Tamizh Kudimakan assurances that those who sabotage the proposal will be severely dealt with. That most Tamil Nadu politicians including TMK President Thiru Moopanar has endorsed the inseparability of Tamil and Religion in Tamil Nadu, augurs well for the future of Tamil Archanai. The WSC appeals to all world Saiva temple authorities and Trustees to employ in future only those qualified in Tamil Archanai and pave the way to restore Tamil to its place of honor in our temples. IT IS VITAL THAT WE SEIZ THIS RARE OPPRTUNITY TO BRING ABOUT THE SUCCESS OF THE TAMIL ARCHANAI CAMPAIGN WITH THE CO-OPERATION OF SAIVA MUTTS, TEMPLE AUTHORITIES AND ALL SAIVA DEVOTEES.

Tamil is Divine

Tamil is divine in the sense that for millenniums it has been shaped as a language of bakti, as a language of worship, as a language that has been forged to praise the gods and make them be present with man. I have culled several relevant lines from the Sumerian Temple Hymns, and show how magnificently Tamil hymns were composed long long before the Vedas and how deeply the importance of Temple worship was grasped by these ancient Tamils, the Sumero-Dravidians. At other places I have also provided evidences to show that Siddha tradition has also Sumerian origins.

These and similar studies are exploding the Aryan myth fed ceasely by Indian Brahmins and Nazi Europeans. The historical TRUTH has been twisted and turned to make the Aryans appear superior and the Dravidians inferior. The Tamils have swallowed these false pills and allowed Sanskrit in their temples. Now there is an awakening, we know what the TRUTH is and are determined to give Tamil the right place in the Temples and world history. Here are the evidences:
