A call for the Adisaivas to Repent

Moved by the vehemence with which some Adisaiva Brahmins in Sri Lanka resist the reintroduction of Tamil as the language of worship in the Temples and a strong criticism of their attitude by the Editor of Saiva Ulagam (See SU 11 & 12), prof. Sambasivam, one of the greatest living Saiva philosophers, recalls in this article the historical origins of these adi saivas, implore them to repent and return to the Tamil tradition to which in fact there are true heirs.

Adisaivas in the Tamil country called battar or Gurukkal are highly respected as only they have the privilege to touch the divines murthies in temples and do the abisekam and so forth, a privilege that is not available to the smartha Brahmins and others today. These adisaivas are historically the priests of the ancient Tamil Vellalas, but who because of accidents of history, dissociated themselves from the Tamil people and classified themselves along with the brahmins from the North who always advocated Vedism and Sanskrit. It is this conversion to the Sanskrit tradition and Vedism that make them ridicule Tamil and rebuff the attempt to re-introduce it as the language of archanas in the Temples.

But this is not new. The decline of Tamil and its displacement by Sanskrit was one of the factors underlying the emergence of Bakti movement around the 5th cent.A.D. in the Tamil country. It is interesting to note that among the four pillars of this movement, except for Appar all the others are Brahmins. But these great reformers did not sing in Sanskrit but rather in chaste Tamil Not only that they also sung eloquently about Tamil itself, calling it the Divine language of unsurpassing beauty.

These saints were made to sing in Tamil, praise Tamil, in order to defeat the Sanskritization and along with it the destruction of Tamil culture that took place about their time. They were reformers who were born to reinstate the Tamil Tradition by defeating the alien cultures that introduced godless philosophies and nihilism of various kinds.

The hymns in Devaram and Thiruvasagam are not simply poetry, even of a magnificent kind. They are in fact mantras as they are utterances of beings who have reached perfections, following the grammar enunciated by Tolkappiyar. The mantric powers of these hymns can be abundantly shown by the historical contexts within which some of these hymns were sung and how they served to cause something miraculous to happen.

By archanas in Tamil what we mean is the worship in the Temples by singing these hymns which are in fact mantras proper.

The AdiSaivas should wake up to the truth. Saivism is the most ancient religion in the world and it predates even Vedism.

The Tamil public must come forward to demand archanas in Tamil. They should not employ Brahmin priests who fail to honour our requests. At whatever cost we should not neglect temple worship. The temples belong to us, the worshippers and not to the arrogant priesthood. There are many temples in Tamil Nadu and elsewhere, decaying because uncared for. We can revive these temples, introduce simple prayers in Tamil with minimum of rites and rituals. What is important is purity of heart and not unnecessarily elaborate and bombastic rituals.
